We mound the fill a little above the surrounding grade when the job wraps up. A hollow that forms later collects water, and on the heavier clay found in parts of Centre Wellington, water sitting in that hollow drains away slowly rather than quickly.
You can, though a new tree there needs a bit of extra help getting established. Wood chips hold very little moisture on their own, and as they decompose they draw nitrogen from the surrounding soil, nitrogen a young tree also needs.
